If you are a guy and you like browsing the net, no doubt you have probably seen the abbreviation “EDC” somewhere, and more often than not also possibly seen some stupendously awesome man gadgets and stuff around it?
Well, if you have and you wondered what is EDC? What does EDC stand for? And whats all the hype with EDC?
Ok, so lets start off like this, EDC stands for Every Day Carry, yup as in the stuff you carry with you everyday. You know, stuff like your cellphone, keys, watch, wallet, lip-balm and such. But, EDC has gone further and the hype has actually grown more amongst the okes that like to carry gadgets, like knives, multitools and such as a way for the to show off their stuff. Stuff that they know about and that they carry with them always but nobody else ever really sees.
You get certain niche groups of EDC like the street photography crowd that like to show the cameras, lenses and notebooks and stuff they carry with them daily ready for capturing perfect moments. Also often referred to as ‘What’s in the bag’…
Although the greatest hype in the EDC scene has been amongst two types of people. The ‘CCW’ or Concealed Carry Weapon guys, who carry a firearm daily concealed on them for if and when it may be required for self defence, and then the knife/knuck/tool guys, guys that support custom knife makers and love knives or carry knives daily, and they often also then love to carry a knuck (knuckle duster) or a tool or prybar of some kind. Often these two groups are the same people, but mostly those that carry guns carry the knives and tools too, but not always do those that carry the knives and tools carry guns.
This craze has even gone further with guys arranging their EDC items according to themes such as types of metal like copper, brasss, bronze, titanium, etc. They often pair titanium stuff with the black, synthetic or modern materials, and then pair the classic metals like copper and brass with more antique or authentic materials like leather and wood.
Although it is often just what is called a ‘pocket dump’, you also get many guys that go through a lot of trouble just arrange and perfectly lighting their kit before photographing it, and you will also often find that those are the guys that literally just buy the gear to photograph it and show it off, whereas the pocket dumpers often use their gear and it can be seen. We don’t judge and to each his own, we love seeing both and catching tips for our own EDC. Watches are also a big part of EDC.
The whole EDC movement has helped tremendously with the custom knife makers and custom tool and knuck makers as it has helped market their products and in some cases make them even more exclusive.
Many of the knucks and knives you cannot just go out and buy as they can only make so many at a time and the demand is high so they sell them on either lottery basis or you have to find one on the second hand market for much higher price. Although that in not necessarily a bad thing, we prefer to buy direct from the makers so the artist himself gets rewarded for his work.
Here on Mullet.co.za we will from time to time highlight some of our favourite makers stuff and show you examples so keep your eyes peeled. Here is one of our all-time favourite pocket dumps, we think is very well themed and photographed, we just love everything about it. Just too bad we don’t get the Flat Dark Earth Glocks here in SA.
And then just to end it all off, and because it is Tuesday, here is my own personal EDC today, and it is Titanium themed for Ti Tuesday..
For those wonder what all items are:
1. Ruger LC9 with custom titanium cerakote slide
2. Kershaw Cryo 2
3. Tain Piccolo
4. Spare LC9 mag with hollow points
